Internet Explorer fails to access FTP sites
Starting with version 5, Microsoft's Internet Explorer by default uses a direct connection to FTP servers even though a proxy
has been configured for FTP. The direct connection is used to read the directory structure of the FTP servers whereas downloads
use the configured proxy.
If direct connections are not possible as e.g. the firewall policy denies it or no gateway has been configured in the client,
FTP access will fail or suffer from long delays. The problem is easy to solve:
- Open the IE menu "Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced"
- In section "Browsing" disable the option "Enable folder view for FTP sites"
