While booting: "Give root password for maintenance"

This message is typical for older DEFENDO releases. It occurs when the system has not been shutdown in a clean way (e.g. due to power failure). Since the 4.0 series, DEFENDO uses a journaling filesystem which ensures the consistency of the filesystem.
Nevertheless, if the filesystem check detects inconsistencies these will be corrected automatically. Only in case of critical errors manual interference is required. The following messages will be visible on the screen:
*** An error occurred during the file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell.

Give root password for maintenance
Please proceede as follows in this case:
  • Reboot DEFENDO by holding down the "CTRL" key and pressing "d".
  • Hold down the "CTRL" key when the system starts to boot (BIOS messages)
  • The reboot will stop an the prompt "LILO boot:" should appear
  • In recent DEFENDOs a menu with menuitem "diskcheck" will show up. Select it using the cursor keys.
  • Older DEFENDOs will present a menu with several different linux releases only (e.g. linux-2.4.26 and linux-2.4.22). Type the full name of the most recent linux kernel, append a space character and the word "diskcheck". Example:
    linux-2.4.26 diskcheck
  • On very old DEFENDO's there won't be a menu. Just type:
    linux diskcheck
  • Press enter and the system will continue to boot
  • During the filesystem check you will be asked to confirm the fix. Just press enter everytime you are prompted.
  • You can confirm everything, however you should check how often "Connect to lost+found" occurs. Please contact technical support if this prompt appears often (more than 3 to 5 times).
